I actually looked into adopting a cockatiel before I reserved Emma. I had been reading how many parrots are given up for rehoming. I think this part of what the TV program is about. I will watch it tomorrow.
There are no bird sanctuaries near me. There is one in Wilton, Ct., about an hour and a half away. They had no cockatiels, but lots of other parrots. Another sanctuary, called the Hudson Valley Bird Sanctuary, has moved to New Jersey--about 2 hours away. They had a cockatiel, but required 4 visits to adopt. I think their policy is good, but it was just far away for me to do that.
The local animal shelters do not have birds. I had been reading that so many parrots are given up and need homes. I thought if I could find one that way, it would be a nice thing to do. Also, I am not an extremely young person, and I wouldn't want to have a bird outlive me.I also looked on the local Craigs List.
I was surprised that I wasn't successful in finding a cockatiel. Perhaps this is testament to the fact that cockatiels seem to make such good pets. However, I do feel good about having made the effort.
