Kathi,
It makes me happy knowing there are bird owners out there like you who treat them as your own flesh and blood. Unfortunately there are vets out there who don't see animals like that. Those people are in the wrong profession. It took me a couple tries to find a GOOD vet, and let me tell you, just because they are classified as an avian vet does NOT mean they are well equipped with knowledge and heart. It's definitely time to interview vets to find the best one where you feel comfortable and welcomed.
I'm really sorry you're going through this nightmare right now and I hope it ends for you and Miss Beasley soon. Like Sarah said, hopefully the test results will she'd some light on this gloomy situation.
Again I want to say this is NOT your fault. We put our hands in veterinarians and doctors because they contain more knowledge on medical issues than we DO (or rather, they're suppose to). How could you know your vet was putting your precious baby in danger? Don't lose faith in medicines that CAN help because of these two examples.
Remember that little Beasley is the very same bird you laid eyes on in the beginning. She's having a rough time but her personality and heart are still there and you need to embrace that even more now as she's going over a few bumps in her life.

there are 2 Klaich Animal Hospital 1990 S. Virginia Street Reno, Nevada 89502 (775) 826-1212 Kings Row Pet Hospital 3653 Kings Row I feel s Reno, NV 89503 (775) 747-1211 Okay...me and Miss Beasley have an appointment on Saturday at noon, with Dr. Cocanour at Klaich Animal Hospital on South Virginia Street. This vet hospital is well established. I've lived in the Reno/Sparks, Nevada area for over 50 years. They are well known, but I never knew they dealt with birds. He is an Avian specialist. When I originally searched for bird vets, I used the yellow pages for Reno/Sparks. Not the Internet. I feel like such a moron.
He called me, discussed Beasley's plight with me for 15 minutes, and as Sarah said, advised me to STOP all medications until she's been properly diagnosed. And acknowledged and CONFIRMED that Baytril CAN cause blindness in animals...even big ones like horses! FINALLY, CONFIRMATION! Do I feel better? No...I feel horrid for trusting a vet without proper diagnosis. I feel totally responsible for Miss Beasley's blindness.
So, for the next few days I've been advised to keep forcing water via the syringe to keep her hydrated. I've done that 4 times so far...it's pitiful, but so necessary. She seems to be able to sniff out the food, but not the water. I have 5 water stations placed in the cage now...yet she can't find them, and hasn't used them.
Im so tired you guys...and so worried. This is our last resort!

It's not your fault for trusting the vet. It could have happened to any of us. And, by sharing what has happened to Miss Beaseley, you may be helping other birds. And, I second everything Emily said.

Best of luck Kathi. I hope this new vet can really help and give Beasley some good quality of life. Please let us know if there is anything I can do to help.
Good thoughts and positive energy coming your way. Here's a hug from three thousand miles away. *HUG*

Well...things have changed again, go figure.
Dr. Cocanour called me back from Klaich Animal Hospital and suddenly doesn't want to see Beasley now. He said its "over his head" and I need to see a specialist, who his receptionist claimed him to be, but he now claims he is not. WOW!
He referred me to a "top notch" specialist in Roseville, California called Dr. Vicky Joseph. Her clinic is called "The Bird and Pet Clinic. She's located at 3985 Foothills Blvd. in Roseville, CA. A 4 hour drive for me.
Also, Dr. Cocanour now reverses his claim about Baytril, and blindness, and backs Dr. Adams treatment, diagnosis, and prescribed meds. 2 hours ago he didn't.
So I'm going to Roseville CA Monday with Miss Beasley. We have an appointment at 1:00 pm. They too, do not think Baytril caused the blindness. They believe the blindness to be illness caused, and reversible. The cost will be $64.00 for an exam, which INCLUDES A FECAL TOXICOLOGY TEST. So I called All Creatures Vet and cancelled the $140.00 fecal test a few minutes ago. Thankfully their lab hadn't picked up the sample I dropped off this morning yet.
Are you all as exhausted as I am?
I'm beyond blown away...

I am definitely on edge of my seat every time I click on this thread. I really hope this all gets sorted out for you soon. I think when it does, I'll finally be able to breath along with you! I'm so baffled by the experiences you've had with vets and I REALLY hope it gets better for you, Kathi!
I'm also sending good energy your way, and know that even though the individuals on this site cannot be with you in person, we are most definitely with you in spirit. Go forth head strong and tackle this, girl!

Oh my! Such a runaround. Sounds to me as though somebody suddenly got spooked about having to deal with a difficult case and possible malpractice and palmed you off to somebody else. Hmmm.... Anyway, maybe you will now finally be in the very best of hands. I certainly hope so, for both your sake and Miss Beasley's. Try to get some quality sleep tonight, Kathi. We're all pulling for you!

Somethings gotta give here. I'm "baffled" as well as to my experiences with local avian vets. Thanks Sarah and Emily, Pammy and ALL who have shared their time, energy, and hearts in dealing with our plight. I'm maintaining positive thoughts. And hoping for the best.
Kathi, Beasley and Greenley

Yes, I've talked till I'm blue in the face to 6 local vets today. None want to take our problem on. All defend Baytril, and completely dismiss it being a cause of her sudden blindness. I'm totally on board with that, because if Baytril didn't cause the blindness, and illness did, she may regain eyesight.
But, oh my gosh, she didn't become blind until she was in her 5th day of Baytril therapy treatments. So I'm finding it difficult to think it's merely a coincidence. I HOPE I'm wrong.
As as far as grit, as I mentioned before, my keets just climb in the bowl and kick it all over the cage, they won't nibble on it, or eat it. They love chewing on their sandpaper perches however.

My logical mind tells me it's not my fault...but it's hard not to take responsibility if I administered a bad drug that caused her blindness. I should have researched it more. The should'a, would'a and could'a's haunt me. And I DO hope her plight resonates with fellow bird lovers. If she succumbs to her illness, and subsequent blindness, perhaps others will not make the mistakes I apparently did. Nobody deserves to go through what she, and I have gone through...nobody!

Her diarrhea never went away, she just went blind. My other Keet Greenley, is fine. Healthy as can be...I'm baffled. I don't know what's going on...but hope California vets can figure it out.

This thread is on fire (which is a good thing, it means lots of activity) and it's really good that you're documenting everything that's happening both good and bad. One day someone in your situation will be panicking and in their search for answers, they may fall on this thread and it will give them hope and guidance.
