Just to chime in with a nonexpert opinion: I don't think keeping the cages close together would be a problem. If they are not in the same cage, they can't hurt each other. Logically, I don't see how the presence of another female would make the hormones worse. Her aggression is another problem: She's pushing the other hen around in case a male comes along. Perhaps if you had another male close by it would make the hormones worse.

I put them side by side now, and cover them around 7 pm till around 9 or 10 AM. The room is not very bright anyway, unless we turn on the lights.

Keeping them side by side is ideal. They will feel the security of a flock without being able to harm each other
