My darling "middle 3" kiddos had their high school band Christmas concert last night. It was wonderful, and my cup was filled.

Woo trombone! Low brass for the win! Seriously, I'm a tuba player, so I can say that.

I'll tell my sons, Bree. That's Jared on the trombone (first chair, woot!) and my baby who is 4, says he wants to play the tuba someday.

Very nice picture, but in band we all know Trumpets rule!!!! My favorite song to play at Christmas was/is Sleigh Ride and the best part is the Horse winnie.

Hahaha, I had a concert like a week and a half ago, and our trumpet player that was supposed to do the horse whinny forgot and did a half-hearted one really late. Afterward we were like, "Dude, what happened to the horse?" According to said trumpet player, the horse had gas. And no way, tuba can whoop trumpet behind any day! Edited to add: Me and my tuba!

Cute picture, Bree!! Thank you so much, Diana! Santa, I too have memories of playing Sleigh Ride in band. The 1st Clarinet part is rather challenging, and when we sat down for the concert my senior year, the boy who shared my stand turned our Sleigh Ride music upside down! I had a heartbeat of panic, and then decided he wasn't going to show me up. We played that beast upside down!! At the concert!! And nailed it!! I will never forget it. And, to this day, I can't hear that arrangement and keep my fingers still. Great memories (of the greatest instrument EVER, the clarinet)! Two of my daughters started out on trumpet and moved to French horn. This is Bridget's first year on the horn. I think French horns are beautiful to look at, but I do enjoy hearing the trumpet part more. Both of my oldest two daughters' boyfriends play the trumpet. But yeah, the horse whinny makes or breaks it. If I were a trumpet player, and was expected to pull off that whinny, you better believe I could do it in my sleep. No way would I be the schmuck to ruin the crowning moment of the piece.

I think it is great your Children are in Band/music, many of my memories today are still from my playing days. I still practice and enjoy it. Music was my gateway to College and I played professionally for many years.
Via facebook I have connected again with many band mates and we still talk about those times. Don't know if I told you but my High School Band went to Europe for a competition and won. Talk about memories for an 18 year old.
BTW I love the trombone tie.

That is sooo cool! Just like my Reesie doing the Macy's parade. She will NEVER forget that. She's been invited back for next year, without having to audition. She wants to do it, but she will have to earn the money.
I gave Jared that trombone tie for Christmas last year. He loves it. He will get a trombone tie tack this year, as he lost the one I gave him last year. He was so disappointed when he came home from a jazz gig and it had fallen off and was gone.
As for our kids in band, Aron and I both play wind instruments, and we insisted that all of our kids join band. They got thru those awful years of beginning band, and then fell in love with their instruments and being part of the band family. We are all heavily involved with all of it, and it's been a great thing for our kids and our family.

Unfortunately the only instrument I know how to use is my voice, but I hope when I have kids I can foster more interest in music for them than I ever had as a kid.

Voice is great too, Sarah! We all sing, too, in the church choir, and love it. Aron and I are longtime members of the choir, and our 3 middle kids have recently joined. Theresa and Bridget are singing in the alto section with me, and Jared is singing tenor with his daddy. I love that my kids have discovered they can make music even without their instruments.

Santa beat me to commenting on the tie. I was going to and then realized I had to leave work. As for voice, I'm jealous. The dogs in the neighborhood all howl when I sing...

When I was old enough to join the youth choir at my church, after the 1st practice the Chior Director pulled me aside and suggested it would be so cool if I learned an instrument I could play with the choir. I learned after I was accepted to The School of Music at Catholic University of America that I sang so bad he wanted me to not sing, but you can not cut a youth haha. The rest is history.
