I think Sunny pretty much is giving up on me here. She will not come out any more. I have to force her to come out. Her right wing is all mess up thank to the vet,he really did not know how to clip wings. And now I think she a disabilities bird. She chip happy, but she upset, hiss and, complain when I pick up her wings. Hi all here a story of what happen to Sunny when she was 18 in 2010. The breeder clip her wings for me and she did just fine. I took her to the vet to get her check her out to see if she is heath look. Then after he clip her wings. One day in October 2010 I had sunny out to play. She was on my shoulder and then flew off and hit my chair. She was bleeding. I did not know the other side was bleeding. So we took her to the vet and the stitch her both wings so they did not bleed anymore. In December thought June she was not her self. I took her to the breeder that did a better job on clipping her then the vet I went to. The breeder and I went to clip her wings, and there was red that look like blood under her wings, she is burred all over the place. Were the vet had put stitch were not heal, u can see the line in both wings. Her feathers are mess up thanks to him ugh. What do I do about my poor baby. O one more thing the vet clip her wings to short. She could not fly right. She hits the wall and everywhere. When she fly she suppose to control were she is flying. When the vet clip her wrong she did not have that control. When the breeder did it she had the control. December thought May she lay eggs and then she stop because we put her in a new cage and stuff. But I blame the vet that clip her wings, because she is so stress out and will not come out anymore. When I saw a vet. My vet mess her up. The breeder has birds and know how to clip them better. My dad said the breeder make shore were to clip and test how far they can fly. The vet did not do that at all. He did it all wrong. Now that Sunny is 21 she will be 22 next month, and I am worried that her right wing will not grow back any more. She may have a disabilities right wing. What do you think and,she is so hard to take out of the cage. I am not sure when she will pass she not as playful as she used to be all she dose is sit and chirp and eat and drink.

I'm so sorry to hear all this. Poor girl. I think at her advanced age, all you can do is make her as comfy and happy as you can. I know you do that.

You should try to test her for blindness. I am worried that she has become so distant and doesnt want to come out because she can't see properly.

I am so sorry to hear of Sunny's troubles. Sarah is so valuable to all of us to know to check her for blindness. You are wonderful to be so kind and willing to make Sunny's life as good as possible. I am always interested in Sunny stories because my sweetie is 15, and being new to birds I don't know what to expect as she ages. Please keep us updated on how things go with Sunny.

I am so sorry Sunny is blind. However, you really did a good thing asking questions on line so you know what the problem is and can take proper care and precaution with her. that should feel good, despite the sadness.

I would move as little as possible, since Sunny already knows where everything is. Of course if you see her repeatedly having a problem with anything in particular, or something seems quite unsafe, then use your best judgment. Best wishes for you and Sunny as you adjust to this life change for her. There is no reason she can't continue to have a happy life, as long you you keep giving her loving care, and maybe some extra scritches and treats, just because.

Yes, You should not change anything in Sunny's cage, or she will have to learn it again by touch. You may wish to put a towel or other soft material in the bottom of the cage, in case she starts to fall. You will have to take these out and wash them regularly to keep them free of droppings.
When you want to take her out, make sure to talk to her in soothing tones before approaching her, so that she is not scared. It may sound silly, but talk her through everything you are trying to do. 'Sunny, I am changing your food now,' 'Sunny, I'm going to ask you to step up, okay?' She may not understand the words, but she will know that you are there, that something is about to happen, and that she need not be afraid.
Blind Cockatiels can have a full and happy life, you just need to know how to make them feel safe and loved. Here is a video of a blind cockatiel doing tricks and playing with her owner:
