He calls her "my friend." Bridget (who is the best big sister in the whole world) & Natey enjoying Kringle & December December proving that she was in the carrots, and her ever-vigilant protector, Kringle

No, Santa. All of my budgies love their cage. They all go in and out at will during waking hours. December (the one pictured with my baby) is the one who cannot fly due to a severe clipping she received before she joined our family. When she jumps out of the cage onto the carpeted living room floor, she scrambles around down there until a human helps her back up to the cage. Just this morning, I had the idea to take the little ladder from their cage and hang it from the lowest point on the outside of the cage. I'm going to teach December how to find it so she can climb back to the cage without help when she wants to. If your question referred to Natey never wanting to put her in the cage, well then.... I do sometimes have to remind him that his little friend does her eating in the cage and she might be hungry or thirsty. Then he will generally put her back within the next few minutes. He really loves this little girl, and is surprisingly gentle with her. She never bites him and tolerates his 4-year-old handling incredibly well. Natey never can remember December's name and calls her either "my friend" or else "the girl birdie what's blue."

I always love seeing photos and hearing about your family Pammy (both birds and humans!).
I really love the idea of the ladder! That'll help her so much coz she can go 'home' just like the others whenever she wants to!

Thanks, everybody. The ladder is working out great, and I am so impressed with how very smart this little girl is. She spotted that little ladder right away and made quick use of it. I didn't have to teach her a thing. She can get to it lickety split, and scoots right on up it and back into the cage all by herself. This evening I saw her do something very scary. She was perched up on top of the big flight cage, teetering on the edge. I watched her make the decision to jump! She flapped her wings like mad, to no avail, and crash-landed on the carpet. She scampered all around and had fun on the floor with Kringle, who follows her wherever she goes, and then headed for her ladder and went home. This behavior is very worrisome, because here in the south, houses are built directly on a cement slab. Literally, the carpet padding and then the carpet are laid right on the cement slab. It's a killer on the feet and legs when you have to stand at the kitchen sink forever, but that tiny girl budgie jumping from 5 feet up and landing on carpet-covered cement? Yes, we do have lots of love at my house, Diana. Thank you. And thank you, kmic, what a sweet thing to say.

Good idea, Luvs. I've been thinking about getting one of those rubberized mats like I have in front of my kitchen sink on the floor. It makes standing for long periods much more comfortable, and I'm thinking it would do a nice job cushioning the blow for December when she jumps. Then again, those mats aren't cheap, and I would need them for three sides of the cage.

Too bad she won't climb down the ladder! Maybe she could learn that?

I think she sees everybudgie else leaping off the top of the cage, and she wants to also. I have seen Kringle trying to teach December how to fly. It's the sweetest thing. I truly hope her handicap is temporary.
