So I rescued a kitten on the side of a highway yesterday, and then spent 3/4 of my day looking for a home or shelter to take her to. I sent an e-mail out to the community band I'm part of asking if anyone wanted her. I called coworkers, friends, etc.
I eventually took her over to the Animal Defense League here and they were looking at her, doing a vet check, and noticed she has a hard time holding her hind end up. They originally said it was possibly that she broke her back.
I ended up having to wait for a bit, so I was checking my e-mail on my phone while I was waiting, and I'd gotten an e-mail from a lady in band asking me about her. I e-mailed her back and said that I'm at the vet and they think she might have broken her back and that I'd let her know what's going on. The vet tech came back with another vet tech and that vet tech felt her back and said that she's sure it isn't broken - it just feels like a pinched nerve. And a few weeks of anti-inflammatory meds and she should be just fine. We speculated that maybe she had fallen off the brick wall that's on the side of the highway and landed on her back or something.
They told me they can't decide whether or not to keep her until their manager gets back from lunch, so they took me to the waiting room and had me sit in there for a while. At this point in time, the lady hadn't said that she wanted the cat so I was still planning on signing her over to the ADL. I called her and told her they think it's just a pinched nerve, and she said that's fine and to bring the cat to her. So I told the ADL that I have someone who wants her, and they said that's great because they couldn't take her because of space issues. They also said their vet can only look at the animals that are being surrendered to them. They can't look at her before I leave.
So I drove like 40 minutes to drop this cat off at my band mate's house. I got there and told her to disregard the e-mail I sent and also told her what they had said at the vet, and she thought it was weird that the vet couldn't see the cat. I don't know what to tell her because they said that. So they took her and I went home. I got home and about 20 minutes later I got a phone call from this lady, now extremely mad. She was like "I just read your e-mail and I'm extremely disappointed that you weren't completely forthcoming with me. This cat has a serious back injury - she can't pick up her hind end - and I'm sure you know how expensive those can be, and I don't want her to suffer, even overnight. So I'm going to have to pay to have her euthanized and I'm going to have to be there with her. I can't believe you took her to a vet and they let her go knowing that she has a back injury. Who did you talk to at ADL, I want to talk to them." And at one point in time she was like "I don't believe you found her on the side of the highway. Have you just had her for a long time and she had an accident and you wanted to get rid of her?"
So I'm sitting here like "Are you kidding me? I found her on the side of the highway, without 20 witnesses. And if you didn't want to pay the cat's vet care, don't tell me you can pay for vet care and you still want the cat." So I gave her the ADL vet tech names and told her I didn't set out to cost her a ton of money. If I had I wouldn't have used an innocent cat to do so.
Well, about 4 hours later, I got an e-mail from the band manager. She complained to the band manager saying that I wasn't forthcoming with her. The band manager e-mailed me and said "How were you not forthcoming? I hope to God you didn't lie to my good friend?!" ... I e-mailed her back and said "#1. I have no idea why you were even brought into this, or why you feel it's your responsibility to do something about it. #2. She said she wants the cat, and can still pay vet fees. #3. If she hadn't said she wants the cat, I would never have taken her to this lady."
No good deed goes unpunished apparently. I have to see this lady at band tonight. And if she comes and talks to me, I plan on giving her a piece of my mind for calling me a liar. Apparently any animals I find on the side of the highway are supposed to be left there, or if I do rescue them, I'm supposed to let them go again because the shelters won't take them.
