Hello Everyone,
Kids went back to school last week so I have some more time to myself.
There isn't much new to report so I didn't write over the summer. We have concluded that our hen Santino is really a "chickakeet" or "paraken" because she just keeps laying eggs! (I've been tracking her eggs on our calendar but haven't tallied up since I took her to the avian vet for shots in April. Back then, it was over 40.) Both birds live in separate cages side-by-side but occasionally Santino is able to spend some quality time visiting with her buddy Mondo only when she does not have the "egg butt" appearance. I turn the cages so that the doors face each other and hook them open. I put treats in food cups in both door openings so they can get reacquainted. They end up sharing a perch but never truly side by side like a bonded pair. They can't stay together for more than a few days at a time because Santino will invariably get aggressive, which is followed by "egg butt" which means an egg will follow .
Never really figured out what is stimulating Santino to continue producing eggs but she is otherwise still looking quite healthy. It's amazing that they spent the first 3-4 years together in a different home without laying any eggs and they move into our famil and BAM, Santino turns into an egg-laying fiend. For the record, little Mondo did pop one egg out a while ago, probably out of sympathy (or jealousy), but stopped after one.
Found that putting a Tupperware container on their playset makes for a great suspended "pool" . Santino loves it and "swims" enthusiastically around each afternoon when they are let out. As the pool is above my head, I can see her little feet moving around. Mondo doesn't like the pool but will fluff up and kind of swings around on an upright piece of twine with her wings outstretched when I spray her with a water bottle. They look forward to the spraying and pool time only when it is sunny. If it is overcast out, they just shuffle away from the spray.
I want to post some photos but my Adobe Photoshop Elements software died and I can't edit my photos to make them smaller . What do others use?
Cherry
