4 days ago when I check my flock of budgies early in the morning i noticed my sweet Harley sitting at the bottom of the aviary. As I opened the door and went inside he flew up to a perch and it was then I saw the damage that had been done. He had blood over his chest, wing and vent area. Also he was missing a leg. I brought him inside straight away. Put him in a cage with a nice soft floor and low perches. All the blood was dried so what every happened to him it must have been late in the night. He has amazed me since! He can still fly & perch on the one leg. Eating and drinking like a trooper. Doesn't seem to mind one bit about being in a cage. When he gets tired, he hops down onto the floor and lays down to rest his other leg. Everything looks fine, he seems to be healing well & coping amazingly. He will now forever be a house pet as i think he may get picked on and not be able to rest very well in the aviary. I am still unsure how this has happened but my guess would be that it was a rat or stoat that has taken his leg. They can not get into the aviary but I suspect Harley was sleeping, clinging to the side of the aviary (as some of my budgies do as they sleep at night) and the rat or stoat must have climbed up the side of the aviary and grabbed his leg through the mesh. I have no other explanation. I have searched high and low and have not found his leg anywhere. A few pictures to follow.

That's miraculous! I glad he made such a recovery! You should still take him to the vet to get some ani-biotics though, we don't want any infection to occur!

Oh my goodness! It's amazing he is doing so well! What a little trooper he is, I hope he doesn't miss the flock too much.

Im thinking of bringing in one of my quiet females for a mate. But ill do that in another few days. So far he hasnt flock called at all, just a lovely tweets every now and then. He seems very happy, not sad. He hops around his cage finding seed and up onto his perches. I will be talking with our vets again tomorrow to see what they think since he is doing so well. Its probly a bit far to bring him in for a vist as we live very rural. They know us very well and deal with our cattle, horses, sheep & dogs ect on our farm so they will prob give me meds for him if they think he needs it with out seeing him. (I could email them pics if they wanted).

Poor Harley! It's sounds like he's doing remarkably well, though! I agree with bringing in a calm female, once Harley's had a chance to heal.

That's great news, Ange! Any candidates for who may be coming inside to be his companion?

I have a 5yr old Albino Female that got attacked by another female when they were young that is very quiet and keeps to her self in the female aviary. I think she may be a nice quiet companion for Harley. I might bring her in this afternoon, if i get time and see how they go.

Yes, please tell us how Harley and the little albino take to one another. Of course it will likely take time for them to adjust to being together.
