Hello All,
Sorry I've been missing for a while. School resumed in late August and kids are both in middle school now. Our birds, Santino and Mondo, are still with us. Both are around 5 years old we think. They were both re-homed to us in April 2014. We were told that both were males but found out that both are females.
Santino, the paraken (part parakeet and part chicken <- just kidding but read on), is STILL laying eggs. We've taken the eggs away slowly after 2+ weeks, taken the eggs away right away, replaced the grate on the bottom of her cage to keep her from tearing at the paper towels, had series hormone shots given by an avian vet, but she is like a chicken. She takes about a month off in between her clutches and resumes. I feel bad for her sometimes sitting on the bottom of the cage on a grate (as her little feet are clutching at wires) after she lays an egg, so I sometimes slip a small piece of cardboard with a folded tissue for her to snuggle on her eggs.
Santino and Mondo have lived in separate cages for a while and get to socialize a few times a week when we let them out. It has been frigid out so they haven't been interested in coming out to fly around.
AND... we got a rescue dog in early October named Freddy from the South. He is very sweet, about 2 years old and only 30 pounds. The poor guy was not socialized at all as a puppy so he was litterly shaking like a leaf for weeks. He shook at every noise from the kitchen. I initially thought he was cold but when I took him to get signed up for obedience classes, the owners said that he was traumatized and quite possibly needed medication. I took their advice, and got a prescription from the vet. We've had him on meds for about a month and he is doing better. Still very nervous with my husband but he is gentle and quiet. He is like a different dog outdoors - running like the wind. Fortunately, our yard is fenced in but sometimes he is hard to get indoors. Here is a pic: I think he must have learned to forage at dusk to avoid loud trucks and people.
I will try to be more active in 2015. Happy New Year to all and welcome to the new members!
