Like many, I have wished so much that my budgies would allow me to give them head scratches. Recently they lost a couple of flight feathers, and I discovered that I am able to scratch them with the feather. We're getting there, sigh.

They key is patience and gentleness. Budgies are a rigid feathered species - although the feathers look soft to us, they are a lot more firm because of their tiny scale. Unless you can get used to touching the birds so gently and delicately, giving a Budgie a head scratch can be like trying to give someone in a knights armor a back rub: uncomfortable for you both! Give it time, and take your queue from your birds about what feel nice, and what feels not so nice.

I too am trying to get my budgie to accept head scratches. It is a no go when i have her out on my finger but i have had a slight breakthrough with it. A couple of nights ago i was telling her goodnight and covering her cage and i reached my hand in the cage very slowly and started scratching her head and neck and she was accepting that and even seemed to enjoy it for a moment. I have done this every night since then and it still works. I dont know if it was the dark quiet setting and she was in her own cage or the fact that she was sooo sleepy but it made me happy. After the scratch session she fluffed her feathers and jmped on her swing for sleep time.

I realize this is a baby step but for Mango to so willingly come out of her cage is an accomplishment! I am thrilled!
