I know Pepper is obsessed with earrings but I'm afraid to wear them now. I've read horror stories of cockatiels swallowing the earring pieces and cooking to death. I'm not even sure if that's possible but Pepper doesn't stop until I take my earring studs out as well so now I just don't wear them when I'm playing with her.

For some reason mine have proven to be child-proof (myself included - I can't figure out how to take them out) but yes it's better to be safe than sorry. I just keep Lucy away from my ears. Because I have uncommon piercings too, in addition to the regular studs, like my tragus and my conch that I literally can't take the earring out of!

Idk what those are, but my studs are the actual ones they pierce little girls ears with, and are very HARD to yank apart to get them off. Mistletoe would have to pull awfully hard, and by then I would stop her. That's scary about them choking.

I actually really love how tight they are, though. They're just there. I wear them all the time and never have to worry about one falling off and getting lost. No way are these falling off. I practically tear my fingernails out trying to wrench them apart.

Parrots can and will choke on small things like earring parts or beads, but usually have to be startled into swallowing them instead of just playing with them. A good sturdy pair of earrings and an attentive birdie parent should make it safe enough.
