I have had Piper since September 2nd and got Snowy a week later.
Little milestones were: when Piper first came out to sit on the "porch"; when both of then started climbing around the cage where the seed catcher is; when Piper started climbing up to sit on the top of the cage.
Yesterday and today both of the birdies came out as soon as I opened the cage door and climbed up to the top of the cage. They are sitting up there chattering and singing. I think they have now expanded their territory to include the whole exterior of the cage. This makes me very happy. It took them 2 months to become that comfortable.
It is so true that one must be patient with budgies.

Piper and Snowy often climb away when I change their food and water. They prefer I not put my hand into their territory. They're still up on top of the cage, and really making a racket. It's like "Okay, here we are! We on this space!"
