Hello everyone, I've been noticing something weird on Poki's beak, I don't know if it's a bad thing, he has had it for a while but only today I had a proper look at him because he has been avoiding me, he's back at being a little scared of me . Anyway, here's a picture It looks like it's growing a lot does anyone know what it could be? Oh and also, he started softly rubbing his cheeks, neck and forehead on the bars of his cage, almost with affection lol I hadn't seen that behavior before, is it normal?

It looks like his beak is overgrown. I would like to see some of the more expert members weigh in. From what I have read, the bird should be taken to the vet for the beak to be trimmed. This may be interfering with his eating. I wonder if he looks any thinner? Does he have difficulty cracking seeds?
There are toys to help keep the beak trimmed.
Let's see what the more expert opinions are before you take any action based on my advice.

Hmm, that beak does look a little odd. Budgiebonkers or Sarah would probably be able to help with this...as for the head rubbing, my boys do it quite often especially when they're moulting and itchy.

There are actually toys that are called Beak Stop Toys LOL. They are often things to chew on, especially wood.

So Perla, these other folks seem to confirm what I said on the old forum. I would definitely get a birdie kabob and some natural tree branch type perches for him to chew on. If he doesn't get that beak filed down on his own, he needs to be seen by a vet. Again, don't attempt to file or trim his beak yourself. It's far more dangerous than toenails and could really hurt him (or heaven forbid kill him). So glad you came on over to our new forum!

Thanks for the replies, he has been eating well, he doesn't look any thinner, maybe I'm still on time to buy him a toy, I hope it can be fixed with that because I don't have money to take him to the vet yet :/ now I'm really worried about him to be honest

I'll try to get him one as soon as I'm able to, I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to my lil Poki

Runaway beak over growth like this can be caused by some problems larger than the need for a chew toy: Poki may not be getting enough of a vitamin or nutrient that he needs, and possibly is calcium deficient. I would make sure that he has a fresh mineral block and cuttlebone in his cage. If he doesn't like to chew his cuttle bone, try offering some very well cleaned egg shell. As long as he isn't showing any signs, I wouldn't worry about this too much, but an over grown beak like this can be a sign of liver problems.

Hi everyone, sorry for replying just now, thank you so much for all the advice! I've been quite busy with some eprsonal stuff, I took poki yesterday to the place we got him, the owner is a vet and he gave him a look for free (which was incredibly convenient haha) and he said Poki couldn't be more healthy! He gave me a list with all the things (the safe fruits, veggies, seeds, etc) I should feed him and Leelo and asked me to bring Poki again in a month to see how quickly his beak was growing, he fixed it with God knows what (I'm sure it was scary because he is as scared/stressed as never before!) but apart from that, he seems good and happy (when I'm not too close to the cage) I'm giving him some time alone with Leelo because I'm sure he's mad at me for letting the vet do that to him

Awww! Poor little guy. I'm so glad you had the beak taken care of. He would thank you if he knew how good this was for him. I'm sure he will get over the trauma with a little time.

I really hope so! It makes me sad that he jumps away when I go to change the water and food
