They don't become sleep deprived or anything if you don't give them twelve hours of sleep. The reason why I usually suggest this as a rule of thumb is that their breeding hormones are activated by the summer cycle, long days and short nights. In winter, when the nights are longer than the days, they do not breed. So, this nice balanced approach seems to keep them in a good place hormonally.
Unfortunately, I am not great at keeping an even schedule because I am still a student. So, my budgies sleep when I sleep, and I just keep them covered for roughly 12 hours or so from the time that we all went to bed. They seem to have adjusted to my irregular rhythm, but I do hope to keep things more planned out in future.

I happy both of mine settle down after the sun sets and Kyba is always the last one to go in to the cage after tossing his ball around or playing with me for a few more minutes of watching tv. they usually start to stir after sunrise and start calling chirping for me to get up an uncover them let them out to stretch. If I'm late they let me know

well, i found out tweets calls because hes hungry, sometimes. i am going to keep them up late and see if he will call at 7am lol. i hope not im tempted to get some window covers to see if it will help
