Hey gang! Finally got on the new forum here, thanks all for making it possible to speak with our bird friends:) I wanted to ask regarding Pickle, if I need to do something different or if as usual it is just time and patience? I can get him to sit on my finger when I have a small piece of millet, but as soon as it is done, he is back to perch. He is doing well in the fact that he LOVES me to scratch all around his little head and beak, it is so sweet, he will come over to my hand and nibble at the finger and lay his little head down for me to scratch:) But, when I put my finger in there and tell him "step up", he will sometimes put a foot from the pressure on his belly but he wont go two feet at all. I feel bad cause I pressure that little belly and he looks at me like "What!!!?" Then if I apply pressure for the two feet he inches closer to the wall and retreats to potential climbing! Wondering if he will catch on or if I can do something else to help him connect or relax? I still go through the small door cause if I open the big one he could get out and get hurt. I wanted him to get used to sitting on my finger in the cage first so when he would finally get out, he wouldn't be terrified if I went to collect him off of a curtain rod or something. Thanks for the new forum!
Blessings!

Welcome, Donna! So glad you came on over.
The head scritches Pickle allows are a huge step in the right direction, and a huge step farther ahead than I am with my birds. So congrats! I find myself wondering how a person ever gets the chance to find out whether her birds like to be scratched on their heads or faces. I start to get my finger close, and they fly off of my other hand's finger or my shoulder. No how, no way are they allowing me to touch their faces with my hands. Kringle will sometimes let me kiss the side of his face, begrudgingly.
I think you're doing great! Yes, time and patience and patience and time. I think that eventually, these little "turkeys" in honor of the season, will come to understand that we would never hurt them.

Hi Donna welcome to the forum! Your bond with pickle is already way advanced compared to me and my 2 budgies - they will never be tamed. I agree that you are doing the right thing by allowing pickle to get used to perching pn your finger in the cage first. Diana will probably chime in soon about her training sessions. She made awesome progress on her two budgies! Pammy, I'm sure your mistletoe will love head scratches - Lucy does!

So, do I understand that Pickle will perch on your finger with two feet if there is millet?

congrats on the head scratches. have you tried to sit next to pickles cage with your hand in it and just talking to pickle not moving your hand or fingers toward pickle. sit down watch some tv just relax set your hand in the cage 5 10 minutes at a time and just talk to pickle reassuring pickle its ok you're safe. if pickle steps on your hand complement him but don't move yur hand. He's already doing it if you have millet. slowly take your hand out but just sit there and continue to talk.
You are right time and patience and more time and patience.

I would kinda coach him into stepping up on ur finger while holding the millet just out of his reach but he still tries to reach for it. that way he has to step up on ur finger in order to get a treat
