Lol Bluebirds, the U.S. is immense, and very diverse. Australia is roughly the same size as a landmass - the one country is the size of your entire continent. The US has dozens of different kinds of environments. We have two huge mountain ranges, deserts, temperate rain forests, insanely large flat planes that go on forever, forest hills, swamps, coastal plains and beaches. It really, really depends on where you go - much like Australia. In America everyone seems to assume that Australia is almost entirely desert, and that your main theme colors seem to be yellow and orange XD When Americans hear Australia, they see this in their head: I live in the mountains, completely surrounded by the forest. Any place that is open has been cleared of trees pretty much - except for some of the valley where the town is. It is farming country, so there are fields but they have been cleared also. Yes, we have raccoon and squirrels here, but they aren't the same species. We also have possums, white tail deer, fox, black bears, coyotes, mountain lions, lynx, skunks and several thousand varieties of birds ranging from huge - wild turkeys, turkey vultures, bald and golden eagles down to tiny little finches and wrens... even hummingbirds the size of your thumb... but that's the east coast. They have a totally different set of terrain and animals a thousand, two thousand or three thousand miles away in the same country XD I love my home, because it is so subjected to the seasons. In summer, it gets over 100 degrees Fahrenheit all the time, in winter, below 0 usually happens once or twice. We get snow in winter and bright sun in summer, and rain enough in spring to make the whole world seem green.

I live between two bush covered chains of hills and have hundreds of kereru and tui. Also a morepork and wax eyes and riflemen and a short drive away kaka, sadlebacks , bellbirds, little spotted kiwi and brown kiwi also a river full of 4 m long eels and trout. And silver ferns totara and kauri in my garden, and the ocean to the south, and kakariki on the hills, and herons in the inlet to the east, and blue penguins in the harbour.
Basically that's what it's like in my part of nz

I'm completely jealous of that aviary! It doesn't even fit in our backyard! :0
It's so nice to hear so many things about where you all live. Here in Malta (Europe) we don't get so many wild creatures and open spaces. (In case you don't know where Malta is, it's a small island country in the Mediterranean - crossing Malta by car won't take you more than an hour) Most of the country's built up (no forests, no mountains etc - just some woodland areas, fields and a lot of sea) so you won't see any foxes, deer, raccoon etc. The weather here is quite warm (when compared to your climate) and will rarely get close to 0. We get a lot of sunny days especially in summer when it very rarely rains (May - September).

Hi there. I'm originally from nz. I come from Taupo, and in fact I've just come back from there for Xmas. Judging by your pics and information, can I guess you are from northland, or the coast.

Your aviary is simply amazing.
We also live in a part of the United States where it gets too cold to have an aviary outdoors. Like Sarah, we live in an area that gets snow and have many of the same animals that she mentioned. But we are in a wooded area versus in the mountains. We have coyotes and fisher cats in the woods which would certainly prey on any small pets that are left outdoors in warmer months.
NZ and Australia are on my bucket list of places to visit.
