Hi, I bought my parakeets about a week ago from a local pet store...I bought them while they were in their first molt and my first question is how do they usually behave in their first molt? My second question is we only have had them a week the male is stepping up and sometimes allows us to bring him out of his cage, the female let's us pet her head but she will not step up or let us hold her..is this normal behavior? sometimes they move away when we put our handa in the cage. thanks ahead of time for the answers!

Molting can make a bird very grumpy. The bird's body is working on pushing sore little pin feathers out of the skin. If they're molting I would offer them a bowl of water to bathe in and a warm room. This will make it easier on them. As for your male stepping up and your female not stepping up, it's completely normal. Every budgie is different, but females tend to be harder to tame. Just keep being patient, and hopefully she'll notice that her buddy is just fine when he steps up and she'll follow suit.

He Lexi, so your 'Parakeets' are actually called budgerigars. You see, there are hundreds or even thousands of kinds of parakeets in the world, and when a pet shop sells them under the name 'parakeet,' its sort of like sticking a sign over a conure or macaw saying 'Parrot.' Its not specific to the breed, so I am going to move your thread to the budgie section You are actually doing very well all things considered Budgies, like all parrots, take about a month to accept big changes, and tend to be standoffish and difficult until they settle in. Any molt can make a bird bad tempered and sensitive for a time, but a first molt is particularly painful and the bird tends to have the worst mood swings during the first molt - growing pains I guess. Because you are able to work with them so well after so little time and in such less than ideal circumstances, I imagine you will have two very tame budgies before long
