Hi budgie experts. Since having a second Budgie I am noticing some new things and would like your input. First of all, the breeder says she thinks Luna, the yellow bird, is a female. Can you be sure by the photos I posted? She is 8 weeks old.
I keep their cages side by side instead of caging them together right away in hopes that they would not bond yet so that I could keep working on strengthening my bond with each of the before allowing them to fully bond together. Does that work?
Now I feel bad not letting them be together because they seem to really want to.
Since getting Luna, sweet Willow has become a biter when I put my hand in the cage. She stops once I get her out and seems to enjoy being with me and is very cuddly. I do let them be together a lot when I am home and able to supervise. I leave their cage doors open and they go into each other cages or come out together.
Luna an keeps trying to mount (?) or get on Willow's back. I saw Willow regurgitate to Luna yesterday. Willow also started chewing up the newspaper from the bottom of her cage.
your input or insight on any of these things that I'm wondering about would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Diana, she is pale yellow but none of my pictures are very good. I will try to snap a better one in tomorrow's daylight. Actually, I have one here that might be slightly better?

Are you sure she's a girl? Her cere looks purple in that picture which would indicate boy. However it's not unusual for two budgies of the same gender to preen each other and feed each other and things like that. It's a "flock" thing. As far as one getting on the lthwr's back.. I'm not sure. I have a male and female and I keep them in the same cage and will breed them in a few months and they do feed each other and stuff but never seen one try to get on the other. I believe it is a sign of dominance?

Well, from the photo you just posted, I would say Luna is a boy. But, lets see some more just to be sure Anyway, everything you are doing sounds just fine. Caging birds separately like this in the short or long term really does help with taming and training, and if it works well for you, you don't ever have to cage them together if you don't want to. As to Willow's new biting habit, this is probably because she feels the need to defend her territory a bit more now that there is a third party in your relationship. Try avoiding going in after her, and just open the door and let her climb out to you instead. Hope to hear from you soon with more pictures!

Here are three more pictures. Sorry they are not as clear as I wish they would be! So keeping them in cages side by side is okay and caging them together would be worse for my taming and bonding purposes? That's what I think you are saying, and that is my hope. Thanks again!

I do think caging them side by side will help in taming.

Yes, caging them side by side will help with taming, and it isn't cruel,or anything silly like that. They get play time together, and the security of seeing and hearing each other all the time without forming the intense bond they would sleeping by each other everything night. Also, Luna may need a new name. He is a he

Haha I was afraid to say it was a male in case there were exceptions because he had red eyes! I suggest the name "Luz"! It means 'Light" in Spanish and Latin, and "Moon" in Armenian.
If you want to take a total other direction, Ravi or Cyrus means "sun".
Or Butter. You could name him Butter.
When you decide on a new name let me know! I will change your sig for you. ^-^
