Hello all! As a new owner, I have many questions about my budgie. I want to make sure I am giving it the right kind of food, and that his eating habits are alright. So, the brand of food that I give my budgie is: KAYTEE Optimal Nutrition Diet. (Nutritionally fortified Conversion & Variety Mix). That's exactly what it says on the package. I know that it's very important to eat the pellets because that's where the vitamins are, but my little guy will dig through and ONLY eat the seeds. I have tried to give him tiny pieces of carrot (with no luck) and cheerios (with no luck). My question is, should I change the food? Or give him a supplement? He also has cuttlebone in his cage, but he hasn't touched it at all. Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance!!!

Hello how long have you had your budgie? Maybe the problem is that he/she still feels a little stressed about moving to a new place and needs a few more days to get used to it.

Don't worry about them not touching the cuttlebone. The important thing is that you have provided one. They will know when their little bodies need it.
As for food, seeds and pellets are important, but vegetables and fruits are even more important to your budgies' health. Just keep trying. It's natural for them to pick out only what they like and are accustomed to eating. Something I do is offer what I want them to eat in the mornings, and then later in the day, bring on the seeds or pellets so they won't be hungry. When veggies are all there is, they generally begrudgingly give them a try. Just be sure not to leave them without food they like to eat for overly long.
What works for me is mixing human baby food vegetables with pellets. True, processed baby food isn't as nutritious as fresh produce, but it's sure better than no vegetables, and my birds will eat it. I have regular success with sweet potatoes and carrots and even the baby food meals that have a bit of chicken or turkey mixed in with the vegetable base.

I have only had him for about 5 days now. Im sure that he is still getting used to his environment. He will eat millet spray from my hand, and doesnt really seem scared. I'm sure you are right! Thank you!!
