So, my budgie is less than four months old I believe. I have only had him for about 6 days now and I noticed today something quite different. He doesn't chirp much uunless I whistle to him or am playing music. I realize that's quite normal from the research I've done, however, he chirps a lot more when I leave the room. Is this him being super excited that I'm gone? Lol I know this is probably a stupid question but I just noticed it today and want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong. His other mannerisms say that he's comfortable and happy, so I'm just confused. (He's all fluffy and sleeps on one foot, stretches and grinds his beak) thank you in advance!!

Quite the opposite is true, actually! Your little guy isn't singing Hallelujah that you left the room, heehee. He's actually flock calling to you. He's somewhat uncomfortable that he can't see you, and calls out until you come back. You're his person. You're his flock. Obviously, you can't be in the living room every second of that day, so maybe you could try singing or whistling or calling back to him, to reassure him that you are still nearby, and no predator got you.

When I noticed this, by pure instinct I whistled back to him from the kitchen, and he settled down. He wasn't squawking though, just little intermittent chirps. As comfy as he seems to be, I can tell when I go by his cage that he's trying to figure me out. I noticed that he's molting today, so I stuck my hand in his cage a few times by the door and just let it rest there. Another time I got a bit of millet spray and offered it to him and he ate it. I don't want to overwhelm him, just get him used to me. He cares nothing for his toys at this point. It really seems like he wants to interact with me but is confused. Understandably so!!! Is it really possible that he is flock calling me even though I've only had him for a short time and haven't gained his trust completely? He is ALWAYS staring at me. I am a firm believer that animals have that sixth sense, so I wouldn't be surprised if what you say is true. Since I was a little girl, animals have always just sort of "accepted" me. I hope he's starting to realize that I'm his buddy! And yes! To answer your question, I named my budgie skittles! I thought the name really fit with his pretty yellow color!

I had a good giggle at Pammy's first couple sentences. Even though you've only had your bird a short time, you're still his flock. He has no one else to consider a flock, so you automatically got made his flock.

That's really sweet that he calls you back! Mine also do that when I haven't spent enough time with them. One of mine's also named skittles She's my green one.

Yep it's a she. They're not the calmest of birds especially when they all decide they want the same perch or all want my hand all to themselves. But it's nice to have some energetic birds, some of my previous ones were veryyyy calm and quiet and not adventurous at all (they wouldn't even touch any of their toys)

dorky. i would push it a little bit further. since he is taking an interest in you, he will probably be very easy to train with some millet and a few hours a day
