I'm not managing to get any better pictures of his/her (I'm voting her ) cere, are these good enough? She's got some white so from your posts I'm guessing it means she's a she? Or did I get it wrong? Thanks guys!

I say boy But you have to look for the white rings. If they're present then it's a girl!

Yeah, looks like a boy to me. BudgieBonkers knows her stuff. You can go ahead and rest assured that you have a little boy there.

Thanks all of you! Luvs, we'll keep learning how to distinguish them.. The picts might not have been so clear as well. Ok so the pet shop told me for sure that Tequila is a girl (I started questioning this most when I saw her try to climb on skittles and her recent interest in skittles) and was 100% sure Smurf was a boy (and he's definitely a she coz now after a few months his cere became dark brown). I really think I should link them to this forum!

Yeah, He is definitely a boy. For some silly reason a lot of pet store workers are completely mistaken that a pink nose equals a girl. Obviously this is nothing more than a guess on their part, and they really should take the time to learn about the animals in their care!

It amazes me, too, that pet store employees and even managers are clueless on sexing young budgies. I have heard them say how convenient it is that pink is for girls and blue is for boys. Others insist that budgies cannot be identified as male or female until they reach adulthood. I'm so glad we know better!

Most pet store employees are min wage and very young. I am not sure how much training they get.

You are so right, Santa, and thanks for the reminder on not being too harsh in our judgments. I am pretty surprised at how clueless my local Petco's store manager is about budgies. In his defense, he has been very open to learning new information I share with him.

I have a small local pet store where everyone is very nice and seem to know a bit about the animals they sell, but they carry almost nothing as far as the items I want.

I am lucky to have a local pet store with very knowledgeable and adult staff, whom I really enjoy working with. When I went in to ask about buying Shadow, the shop worker on the floor had a visceral reaction of relief to my calling them 'Budgies' instead of 'Parakeets,' and we spent a good half hour swapping tips and facts It is a hole in the wall hidden gem - they sell only captive bred hand picked animals - from the umbrella cockatoo all the way down to the goldfish. The store is small and cramped with all the merchandise they have, but they take exceedingly good care of their animals rather than the reverse which is typical of most pet stores: crammed in animals and well maintained stock.
