You're lucky all right, Sarah. When I referred to these birds as budgies to my Petco's manager, he asked me why I keep calling the parakeets "that."

I like telling people I have a parrot and they ask what kind and I say Budgie, they look and ask what is that and I then say parakeet.

It's quite different here when it comes to parakeet vs budgie, if you say parakeet people will remain looking at you, sort of what animal is that? Everyone refers to them as budgies. Probably if you say parakeet 'parrot' is the first thing that comes to mind. Re pet shops, most of them are flower/plan shops with a small pet section so they're mainly specialised in plants. From the actual small petshops I've gone to, I wasn't impressed. I got my last three budgies (Tequila, Smurf and Skittles) from one of these plant shops with a pet section, and they're the ones which I feel most comfortable with as they had a sign that a vet checks out their birds and I've even seen a budgie that wasn't for sale and was in quarantine coz he had an eye infection. Also they had a number of cages for their birds rather than small ones which were packed. So that shows that at least they do care for their animals' well-being.
