Emma (my cockatiel) is, by choice, spending most of her time in the large cage with the budgies.
I can definitely see that the cockatiel is more shy and the budgies are more aggressive.
I just gave Emma a sunflower seed as a reward. Piper flew over and tried to take it away from her, even following her into the smaller cage. In the end, Emma dropped it, and neither one had it. The funny thing is, Piper doesn't like and (I believe) can't even eat them. However, Emma then flew over to my computer monitor, which I guess she thought is a better bet, and I gave her another.
Piper and Snowy can get very aggressive if I am giving out treats. They will start fighting over a whole millet spray, where there is obviously enough for both of them. So, they behave toward Emma like they behave toward each other. However, she mostly does not fight back. Every now and then I will see her open her beak in warning when one of them approaches.
Emma has a bowl of toys on top of the cage. She's been playing with them for a couple of days. This morning, both budgies came out of the cage, perched on the bowl, and started exploring the toys. Emma left. The toys are mostly too big for the budgies to play with. Oh, now they're gone, and she's back with the toys .
When I give them food in the cage I generally put it in a large dish on the bottom of the cage. That way, there's enough space for everyone. I see the three of them eating. Emma will often take some seed, then back away, then come back. But, it seems to be okay and I do thin everyone gets his share.
I am definitely going to keep an eye on things. So far, though, I think they are sorting it out okay.
