This is from my italian grandmother... I will never eat Ragu again since I've learned this recipe If you're making a box of pasta, my recommendation is Barilla Protein Plus. It's very good for you and also very filling. But any pasta will do. There's 2 ways to make this. With or without meat. Ingredients: 1-2 Cans of Red Pack crushed tomatoes (I recommend 2, I like a lot of sauce. If you are making this as a meat sauce, definitely use 2 cans) 4-6 Fresh Basil leaves Pepper 1 T sugar Salt Olive Oil Red Wine (for the meat) If you are making meat sauce, do the meat first: Coat skillet w cooking spray so meat does not stick to pan Brown 1 lb of chopped meat in a skillet. Add 2 T of red wine Cook until meat is fully browned, then drain meat. For Sauce: Put 2 cans od Red Pack crushed tomatoes in large pot. add 4-6 basil leaves. Add 1 T of olive oil. Add SEVERAL turns of a pepper grinder. Also add the meat you just browned. Keep on low flame, stirring frequently. Once sauce starts to thicken, add 1 T of sugar. It takes about 30-40 mins to fully thicken and cook. For the pasta, i add salt and olive oil to the water before boiling, this helps so the pasta does not stick, and the salt gives it a little flavor. It's a quick, short, very yummy recipe

Sarah, I'll have to ask my grandma because for some reson I want to say I remember her always buying tomatoes. But at the same time, the consistency of the can makes me think no. But I will definitely text her after work tomorrow to find out!
