I have been pleased at some positive signs over the last few days.
- hopping on my arm to get her sunflower seeds has become routine for Emma. She seems very comfortable with it and stays for a little bit while I talk to her.
- this morning she suddenly flew over and perched on my cereal bowl, eating Cheerios with me.
- this morning she flew into one of the bedrooms and didn't seem to know where she was. She was flock calling, and the budgies were calling back to her. I immediately went in and found her perched on the bookcase, looking a little bit frightened. I talked to her for a minute or so. When she seemed calm, I offered my arm and she hopped on (YAY!). I took her back to the livingroom and, as soon as she could see where the cage was, she flew back to it.
- she frequently flies over to perch on my laptop. She doesn't stay very long, but she seems to like me talking to her while she's there. And, when I offer her my forearm, she readily hops on and gets a sunflower seed.
I am getting better about getting her back into the cage. We are in a routine where I let all my birds out when I first get up. At that time, they have pellets in their cage from the night before. After an hour or so I put some seed in their cage and they go back in to eat. I close up the cage and don't open it again until I get back from wherever I go around the middle of the day. When I get home I let them out again. At that time, I put their veggies in the cage. Around 7:30 I start turning off some lights and they usually go back in without a problem. If they resist, I put some more seed or millet in the cage. At 8:00 I turn off all but one light in the living room and at 8:30 I cover them for the night. Since Emma has been sharing the budgie cage she has stopped hissing at me when I cover them.
The longer nights don't seem to have helped slow down the mating behavior between Piper and Emma.
I feel pretty lucky with Emma. She is very sweet tempered. It is true that she isn't very hands-on yet, but she doesn't bite and, in general, seems like a happy little thing.
