My brother, Wayne, comes over most weekends and spends Friday night and Saturday with me.
Wayne and I spend time in the living room and then time in the dining room. The birds' cage is in the living room When Wayne and I are hanging in the dining room, I occasionally go out to the living room, find Emma on top of the cage, and offer her my arm. She's been consistently saying, "Well, thank you so much for asking, but I think I'll say right here for now."
This afternoon when I came out, she hopped up onto my arm!
I told her how special she is and that, because she's so special, she could come into the dining room and spend time with the grownups.
She looked interested, but uncertain. Kind of full of attention, up on her tip toes, and kind of skinny. I took a step very slowly and then another. After three steps, we were just where we would need to walk around the corner to get into the dining room and, suddenly, she flew back to the cage.
Wayne and I were in the dining room a long time. Twice more, I came out and got Emma on my arm, and every time I got a little closer to the corner before she flew back to the cage.
Then I got some spray millet. After two tries with the millet she came with me all the way into the dining room. She looked full of attention, very curious, but also kind of apprehensive. When we got to the table, I tried sitting down, very slowly, and half way down she flew back around the corner and onto her cage.
I'm thinking that Emma is getting more and more of a sense of who she is, who I am, and who the budgies are. I feel as tho she is starting to be interested in having more of a relationship with me. But, I think she is like a little kid, who wants to do something, but is a little scared. Every time little kids get a little closer to what they are afraid of, they dance away again. Back and forth, until they finally take the plunge.
I think Emma's been testing whether she will be able to get back to the cage when she wants to. I think she needs that security and she's gradually starting to trust me about it. I think that, soon, I may be able to take her into the dining room and have more time to play with her and possibly train her one on one, without the budgies interfering.
She made me very happy today.
