Sweetie Pie is 15 years old and has only been with me for two weeks. My house, her cage and everything in it is new to her. She had been in her last home all of her life. She bangs her cage a lot when I come near her. She backs away from my finger but if I persist she will get on my finger. She is tame so I am letting her take the lead. Right now she is on my shoulder. She flew to me. She is preening herself. If I turn my head towards her and quietly tell her how nice she is she quickly ducks her head banging my shoulder with her beak. Like she does in her cage. Her head feathers go from straight up to half mast. Or just now she bobbed her head and made a squeaky sound. This doesn't feel friendly to me. what is she saying to me? Stay away? Is she threatening me or trying to impress me? She will investigate my glasses and neck. She doesn't want to be touched, but clearly she wants on my shoulder. Please help a newbie translate bird talk. Thank you
Okay she just nibbled on my lips. It feels to me like she wants to be friends but maybe a little afraid of me so....wait she is coming on my cheat to play with the ties on my sweat shirt. Confusing bird

You know it doesn't sound like she's warning you. Are you sure Sweetie Pie is a female? If she's bobbing her head ad banging her beak...those are things that males do. I think she really does want your company, but since all of this is new, you guys have to start over and form your own bond. Take it easy and let her explore. She'll loosen up, and then I'm sure she'll love your company without any fear. Continue to talk to her nicely. Also, for some reason birds are less afraid of people's face than hands. Try nuzzling her with your nose or cheek and see what happens.
Pepper nibbles on my lips too...I'm not sure if she wants me to feed her,she wants to feed me, or she thinks my lips are a toy.

Thank you Emily for your reply. I had heard that males did that behavior. My bird is a girl, she is from a breeder and raised a couple nest of babies over the years. But you are right about her being more comfortable with my face than my hands. Sweetie has been on my shoulder for a couple hours now and she is now walking down my arm as I type trying to get closer to my face. She is nuzzling my mouth. Considering I have only had her two weeks tomorrow she is a lovely bird. I am new to birds and don't read her mannerisms very well. My instincts tell me that she wants to be friends but there is a certain amount of reservation and fear since we haven't known each other very long.

See my post in cockatiel behavior. I moved it to pin it after a lot of confusion on my part.
