Shasta has been making a sound that sounds a bit like Donald Duck, just not so wet. And my parents' Quaker Parrot makes the same sound when he's talking (you can hear "hello" from the Quaker), but is that what a budgie sounds like when it's trying to talk?

Kenny has a video of Kyba talking. Maybe if he sees this he can send us the link? Or if you know his YouTube name you could search it. It's very interesting

So, your baby said his first word--it must feel great.

LOL! I was totally like PARTY! Apparently he liked my response and so for the next like 3 minutes he went "Hello, hello, hello, hello ...."

Budgie immitation can be shockingly clear, although when they are learning a new word it tends to be a transition from a more natural sound. Here is one of my favorite stars of YouTube chatting away

They can say words except they don't have lips so some syllables are a little slurred . I've seen Disco on YouTube. He cracks me up. I had a male bird who could say some words but nothing like our little friend Disco!

Shasta makes this sound that sounds like a duck (my parents' bird taught him that) and he's been making this noise for a while, and when I was talking to my dad on the phone he said it sounded like he was talking. And last night I was just talking to him and I heard this duck sound that sounded a TON like "hello" and I looked over and he was staring at me. So I said hello and he said it right back. He isn't as clear as Disco is in that video ("I'm a parakeet") but I know I heard it.
And he was so proud of himself, he did it all night too.

Shasta could get that clear Disco is... I believe four or five now, and his owners practice with him every day. If you want Shasta to sound clearer, you should make speech lessons part of your daily routine!

I talk with him a lot. He stares at me half the time. It's kinda funny.
He also likes to imitate random sounds. I can't tell you the number of times I replaced the batteries in my fire alarm before I finally figured out it was him making the noise. And I have to keep checking the shower cause he makes the noise the shower head makes when it's running.
