That is exciting! Isn't the climate in Alberta cold in the winter or would your birds live in the aviary for the warmer months? I live in an area where we have very cold winter months so we'd never be able to have an outdoor aviary - at least not for year round use. I'd also be afraid that a critter would either damage the aviary or rip it apart to get to the birds. I know people who live in similar habitats here in the same town and have lost many chickens to wildlife. We live next to the woods so there are hawks, owls, foxes, coyotes, and the occasional fisher cat.

I think the holes in chicken wire would be too big.

Winter is very long in Canada. I'm from northern Michigan, and the only months you can usually expect temps not to dip below the freezing point are June, July and August, and even then, it gets quite chilly at nighttime. I know you're excited, but I'm wondering how this will work at all. I'm thinking those birds will be cold year-round.

But you can bundle up all cozy in a sleeping bag. Birds can't.

I hope it works out well for you, Fayth. I don't mean to be a wet blanket on your fun idea. If you plan to keep them outside only in summer and run a heater at night to take the edge off the chill, then it's probably a fine idea. I hope you have fun with it. I do think it's super neat that you and your mom have a plan to work on a project (any project) together.
