I am curious to hear from those of you more experienced in cockatiel behavior to shed some light on Pearl and Sweetie Pies relationship. They live companionable together. They will even perch on the same perch, but never closer than a bird and a half distance a part. Pearl is the bossier one of the two, but not too bossy. She will do the open beak lunge if Sweetie gets too close to me or food. however Sweetie will just back away and approach slowly from a different direction, maybe with slightly more distance between them, often time with success. My question, will they bond to the point that they preen each other? They have only been together.... However long I have had Pearl. 4 to 6 weeks, I think.. Pearl likes to be scratched by me. Sweetie is calm, wants to be with me, but doesn't want to be touched. Don't know if that matters with her being preened by another bird. Do they bond to a mate for life? sweetie did have a mate that died.

I too am interested to hear replies on this. I'm not sure who here on our forum has had at least two cockatiels long term. Good questions!

Since no experts are chiming in: From what I have read on the internet it seems it can take a while for two adult tiels to become more affectionate to each other.

Thanks for your input, Diana. I really do think that IF I am going to eventually have two cockatiels, I'd be better off getting the second soon, while both Mistletoe and the newcomer are very young. I'd want them to bond quickly and grow up together. What do you guys think?

Pammy, that was my thought. With Leo. But Lucy was mad at both me and him. It was awful to see. I do think they would have tolerated each other if I kept him but I could not risk either bird getting hurt.. But it is true for them to have a better chance while they are young

I think I will go and research on the internet. I am grateful they get along at all. My two had met before so they were not strangers. I think sweetie is pretty docile. I since have learned the owner/breeder rehomed sweetie because the others were bullying her. Pearl had her hen friend that she grew up with and the breeder/owner felt that relationship was making it difficult for either hen to bond with a mate. And that is why I got the odd hen out I.e. Pearl
