Our little friend Kili was on the bottom of the cage last night when we put him to bed, all fluffed up and cozy. Kind of weird, but he's a funny bird so we didn't worry too much. This morning, he was on the opposite side of the cage, still on the floor, puffed up but not moving. When we opened the cage, he didn't try to move. We are holding him now, and he isn't trying to get away, just puffed up. His eyes keep closing, but he is awake. We haven't really tamed him too much yet, but was handled much as a baby before we got him. Any ideas? We are very worried

When I got Seuss, he was fine, and then all of the sudden he fell to the bottom of the cage, didn't move, and then didn't want me to put him down (probably cause I was warm). If you can, I'd take him to the vet because it does sound like he might be sick.
Don't quote me on this though. I'm going to let someone who knows a bit more about budgies to weigh in.

Staying on the bottom of the cage does worry me a bit. Make sure there is food and drink on the cage floor. A heating pad on one side of the cage can also help him in case he starts feeling cold (make sure it's only on one side so that there's the option of not staying near it). A few questions, how's his stool and does the area around his cere look clean? Have you seen him eating and drinking? These are some other signs of possible illness which you could look out for: www.mit.edu/~rei/Birds-sick.html . I wouldn't rush to conclusions, but if possible do post the answers to those questions as others on the forum who can help much more than I can will probably need those answers. A vet visit might be needed though. Hope he gets back to his normal self asap.

I'm not an expert, but I think he's likely to be sick. I am concerned about your other bird. I think: keep him away from your other budgie (far away--another room if possible). I see you've only had him a short time. I would take him to a vet if possible, or back to where you bought him. If he is contagious, the other bird may also be infected. I'm sorry.

hm, sounds like he misses his nest, how long have you had it? sometimes the baby will go back to the nesting phase. put a towel inside a bowl. cover half the cage with a heated blanket

It sounds very much like he is ill. You need to keep him warm as much as you can, try to get him to eat and offer him water constantly. If you have to try to coax it into his mouth by dripping water down his beak, you should do it.
He really should see a vet as soon as possible.

Sadly, Kili died before we could get him back to the place we bought him. We did try and keep him warm, his cere was clean and clear as well as his vent. We really don't understand WHY, as he was his usual charming, playful self the very day before. We did take him back to the place we got him a little later, and they did a check regarding conditions he had been kept in, etc. We passed all muster (I knew we would) and they said that sometimes, small birds especially parakeets, just get sick and die. We are mystified, and very sad for our little friend. He had SO much personality and a fabulous voice!
Thank you for your sharing your wonderful wisdom and concern with us. You are a lovely place to come with cares and concerns.
