OH GOD OH GOD! I didn't even see the final post. I'm crying now! I'm so very sorry for your loss. Losing my birds hurt more every time. My first budgie had his little neck broken, and I held him as he died. It hurt so deeply. I'm sending you happy thoughts, and love. Thank you Budger for your condolences....
We're gonna be okay...I think. And gosh I teared up hearing about your loss. It does "deeply" hurt when we lose our beloved pets. We spent a lifetime loving them...they are treasured family members...and when we lose them our hearts break...but somehow we recover, and reach out to more pets who need homes and love. I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I'm gonna get another bird. I'm closely monitoring Miss Greenley's attitude, and behavior after losing my sweet Beasley. All day yesterday Greenley chirped and tweeted trying to hear a response from Miss Beasley. Never heard so much chatter from her. She's looking, and listening for her companion. I still haven't taken Beasley's cage down cuz I know it will shock Greenley.
I will make a decision by this weekend about getting another bird. I'm researching rescue birds locally per Pammys advise. I just need a couple days to decompress. Miss Greenley needs a friend...I'm sure of this...she's really acting strangly. And Miss Beasley's cage, now empty, is heartbreaking for me and Greens.
We'll see....

Kathi, I'm glad to hear you are researching rescue birds, and I'm also glad to hear you are taking until the weekend to decide whether this is right for you.

Thanks Pammy...
I've always rescued animals. Both Elvira and Peanut are rescue kitties. I rescued Elvira from Quincy, CA....and Peanut was rescued from Grass Valley, CA. YES, I actually traveled to another state to get them both. I volunteer my time locally here in Reno, Nevada at our local animal shelter. I started doing this 4 years ago when they became a no-kill shelter. I spend a copious amount of time there. Mostly I come in to brush, hug, play, and love the cats who live there. I knit toy mouses that I freely donate, and give to these sweet homeless babies. I also participate in adoption clinics at our various local pet stores here in Western Nevada like Petsmart, Petco, Pet Supermarket and Pettin Place.
I also do "blankie" drives. I am friends with a local 70's - 80's rock and roll DJ at KOZZ....Renos Classic Rock station, and he helps me get the word out every year for this project. We collect blankets for the animals at the Nevada Humane Society. The local support for the blankie drive is overwhelming.
Also, twice I've participated in fund raisers to bring in much needed funds for our no-kill shelter, which involves myself, and others being locked inside a cage at a designated location until our financial donation goals are met. People show up and donate until we reach our goal. 4 years ago we raised $50,000 dollars during one of these events. I lived in a cage, in a parking lot for 5 days and nights to achieve this goal.
Animals are my LIFE. My very PURPOSE.

That's wonderful, Kathi. Just think of how much you have eased suffering in the world. You have so much to give.

Kathi, I am not at all surprised that you've rescued animals in the past. It fits your personality. Maybe there is a bird sitting in a shelter right now, just waiting for you.

Thanks Emily and Pammy,
my my problem is that I deleted my account. Don't know how to rue activate it. I have some pretty major vision issues, which is why I use bold print when I post here. But somehow I deleted my account, that's my current issue. I'm logging in as a guest, using my member name.
Any my help would be appreciated.

Okay, I managed to recreate my account, but I guess all previous activity cannot be recovered.
Today I finally took Beasley's cage down and stripped it clean of all of her toys, perches, dishes and mirrors. That wasn't easy, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Im going into Reno tomorrow in search of another parakeet. I'm not even close to being ready to do this yet, but Greenley is. She's completely shut down. Won't play, hardly eating. Incessive chirping in the morning hours. She just sits on the same perch near Beasley's cage and stares into the empty cage. I've never witnessed this behavior in Miss Greens. She's normally a busy, busy bird from sunrise to sunset.
I saved a few of Miss Beasley's old toys so I can erect a memorial in my curio cabinet in her memory. I'm replacing everything in her cage with brand new stuff for our new arrival tomorrow. I'm nervous about the adoption...cuz I'm still grieving Beasley's loss.
So, I guess I will see you all soon, with a new baby to introduce. Yikes, here I go again.

Good for you, Kathi! I know it's so very hard, but getting a new parakeet to love does not mean you no longer miss Beasley. We all understand that. I'm very happy for you and Miss Greenley that you will be able to transfer a portion of your grief and pain into new love and caring for a new little creature. Allow yourself to have fun tomorrow while choosing your new baby. When you do feel some joy in it, don't let yourself feel guilty! I'm certain Beasley wouldn't want you to feel sad while getting your new birdie. Best wishes, and we BETTER see some new baby pictures tomorrow night!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited for you!! My little budgie is a rescue as well! I had gone years without a bird, but still wanted one so badly. I was scared right after I got Osiris. I didn't know if I could still care for a bird, or if it would turn out to be a mistake. It had been so long I could barely remember what it was like, all I could remember was how much I loved my birdies. Now I've had him, not even two weeks, and he has all of my heart. I had to go to California to be with my father, as he is getting heart surgery, and as a result had to leave behind my precious little dachshund Buddy, and my new Fiance. I've been away over a month and needless to say it's been hard, but my new little friend has done so much to heal my heart and bring me happiness. I know yours will do the same. A new pet doesn't replace the old one, it just reminds our heart how much love we still have left, even when we think it's broken.
