I need your help once more, guys! I just noticed that Leelo's vent is swollen again, is it too soon for her to lay eggs again? it's been a month since she laid her first clutch :/ (as I had posted before, they all were bad, and the only chick that hatched, disappeared mysteriously the next day) I completely forgot to take the nest out after the last egg was kicked out :/ is there anything I could do? or is it too late? I haven't stopped feeding them with seeds, veggies, eggs and peanut butter... Oh and I have a question about Poki, his tail looks very dirty O.o as if he had dipped it into very very dirty water, her vent looks clean white as always though, does anyone know why this could be? and how can I clean it in case I'd need to?

a month is plenty of time to recoup from the energy spent. do you want babies? if so, leave the nest box in. if not then idk. :s

Thank you luvs, I do want babies, I was worried because I thought it was too soon xD but if it's not, then I won't worry and just be happy!

Oooh, I have to disagree. I don't believe a month is anywhere near long enough time for your little hen to be off duty from laying eggs. I know you want babies, and I want you to get to have babies, but she needs a real rest. I'm thinking six months. But I am not a breeder nor an expert. I would definitely research it, or get some more opinions here.

I've read it takes 6 months also. It is a very exciting aspect but they have such small bodies I can't imagine she is ready for another clutch. It takes a lot of calcium to lay eggs and I can't see how she could have made enough to calcify more. I've never bred so I don't know for sure. I'm going to breed mine in a few months, but if it were my budgies I would take the nest box away for a few months. Again, this is just my opinion I'm not saying it is right or accurate!

In the dog world one of the differences from a puppy mill and a breeder is the breeder lets the bitches take time off between pups, where the mill breeds them every time they are able. Not saying you a mill, but let the little one have a break. It will be better for all in my opinion.

After writing the above, thought maybe I need to explain that a female in the dog world is referred to as a bitch like a female budgie is a hen.

The thing is, if she's already laying, will it work to take the nest box out? And, if the eggs are removed, won't she keep replacing them? Hope someone with more knowledge will have answers.

Diana, that is what I was thinking. I guess it is too late to remove it now. My thing would have been to remove it after the first clutch was out of it. But removing it now would make her egg bound if she truly is calcifying an egg inside her.

Of course you are correct in the terminology of a female dog, Santa, but I myself have never been able to use that vile term on sweet little girl doggies. It's a shame that people choose to make normal things become foul. I know I'm stepping waaaayyyyyy outside of our conversation now, and hijacking this thread besides (sorry, Perla!) but the one that is by far the most offensive to me is when someone uses the name of our Savior as a curse word. I just flat-out don't even understand the reasoning behind that one.
Back to the discussion at hand, I was unaware that removing a nesting box could cause a hen to become bound. Wouldn't she just expel the formed egg whether there is a nest or not? Can a hen make a choice not to lay an egg that ready to be laid? A human cannot prevent herself from giving birth when the time comes, even if circumstances for having a baby are far from ideal. I'm very curious to know.

It's alright Pammy (I totally agree with you, by the way) What do you guys suggest I should do? Should I leave the nest until she's finished with this new clutch? I do want babies but I also want Leelo to be healthy

you could separate your pair for a bit to bring her out of condition before she lays anymore

From the information I've retained from previous posts that was the assumption I got. Was she would be egg-bound. Or at least at a greater risk to become egg bound

Hmm, well I don't know what the right answer is here. The most important animal in the equation is the one that's already alive - Leelo. I guess I would say that you should do what you feel in your heart is the very best thing for her. I know you love her and care about her very much.

I really don't know what to do she laid an egg last night and there's another on its way, i went to buy a new cuttlebone because they finished the first one... I dont want her to get egg bound :/ i think im gonna let her finish laying this clutch and depending on how things go, i'll see if taking poki away or not. The nest is definitely getting out after the eggs/babies are all out. I want to modify their diet as well, any suggestions?
