Hello, My boyfriend surprised me with a baby Budgie yesterday. I had been planning on getting a bird in a few years, so I have been researching. He only got the bare necessities, so I plan on getting a bunch more stuff, including something other than the dowel perches that are in there now. I had planned on going today, but we are in the middle of a horrible blizzard. I live on the edge of the woods, so I could go get some natural branches. I would also love to know of some homemade toys I could make. I am unsure if I have a boy or girl, so I don't really have a name, but I really like the name Peepers. He/she is yellow and reminds me of a peep lol I kind of hope it's a boy so I can call him Mr. Peepers lol But I really don't care either way lol I could really use all the info I can get lol I look forward to meeting all of you and your Fids. Feel free to ask me anything, and I am open to any and all advice =)

Hello mojean!
It looks to me like your new baby is probably female, but I would need a photo in brighter, natural light to be sure. If you want to have a close look yourself, young male budgies have pink or purple ceres of a fairly rich and vivid color. Young females typically have white nostril rings or pale blue areas of the cere. If the cere... or nose is more than one color or has any significant areas of white, it it female.
It may also interest you to know that you have an olive recessive pied, a lovely little bird! Bear in mind that because of her mutation, her eyes will never lighten, although her feathers should become a richer color after her first complete molt.

The cere is pink and white, kind of splotchy lol Right now it kind of looks purplish. So here eyes will never get the lighter iris? That really does intrest me very much =) I would love to know more =)

Such a pretty bird! And from what Sarah said she has a very interesting mutation What mutations make irises keep their dark color? Leelo must be around 12 months old and she has dark irises, Poki is around 13 or 14 months old and he already has very white irises.

The eyes are actually affected somewhat like in albino birds - Instead of pale red or pink, the eyes are a unique "plum" color. A sort of purplish: it is never the black or brown of a baby bird or the silver of an adult. It's caused by the recessive DNA chains. Sort of like blue eyes are recessive in humans... only much more rare and specific.

She's really really really pretty! Love her colours. Thanks bree for those links (especially the first one). Re home-made toys, my budgies love these balls made of toilet paper rolls (http://littlefeathers.freeforums.net/thread/308/simple-toy-treat). I've also made them ladders and a cane structure And welcome to the forum. Looking forward to get to know you and this lovely little budgie.

Thanks everyone =) Any advice on a good way to tame? I have been sitting next to the cage, talking to her, singing, and that sort of thing. And I love your set up kmic. Wow. One day I hope to have a whole bird room, and hopefully have something as nice as yours.

Thanks. It's a quite recent project and they seem to be enjoying it. It needs more maintenance and time that I thought though.
Re taming, that's from where I started and then they starting coming for food and treats, but I really am not the person to give you taming advice. Didn't have much success as my schedule is totally irregular and can't really do otherwise.
